Anyone who has traveled on a 'long haul' flight sitting in economy class knows how grueling it can be. Frequently you sit in the middle seat so you can hardly move, the food is horrible and you aren't able to sleep. You might find it conducive to your good physical health and mental attitude to schedule a long layover, like 6 hours, so that you can rest and regroup before you start the next leg of your journey. Sometimes due to airline scheduling, you involuntarily have a very long layover, which most of us dread.

Some airports have hotels right in the terminal which allows you to not only rest, but to get away from the crowds, relax and even to shower or soak in the bathtub. Some hotels sell the rooms in 6 hour time periods and some require you to pay for a full day though you will only use it a short while. Check-out the ones listed below. Taxes may be additional to the prices quoted.

Ambassador Transit Hotel
Located in the Singapore Changi Airport Terminal. They offer basic rooms with no frills but very comfortable and clean. The hotel is conveniently located right in the terminal. Though there are no frills, the rooms have TVs, a nice bathtub to soak in and decent beds. The price makes up for the lack of opulence.

Price: $37 for 6 hours

Regal Airport Hotel
Located at Chek Lap Kok Airport (Hong Kong International Airport). It is connected to the airport but it's quite a walk. This is a full-service hotel which has been voted 'Best Hotel in Asia-Pacific'. It is very comfortable with restaurants nearby.

Price: $103 - $193 per day

Dubai International Hotel
Located right in the Dubai International Airport, it's location is very convenient because your departing gate is probably just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. This hotel is very modern, comfortable and clean. The beds are comfortable with feather pillows and duvets. The bathrooms are spacious with large tile showers but there are no tubs. Some of the rooms have 'massage chairs' which are nice after a 12 - 14 hour flight. There are 2-3 complimentary bottles of drinking water and a basket of fruit. A food court is nearby.

Price: $115 for a standard room for 6 hours

London Heathrow Marriot Hotel
This hotel is not connected to the airport but if you have traveled well beyond London with a layover before your journey home, you may still find it worth the trouble to go to a hotel for a few hours. We have found this hotel to be very nice with very comfortable beds and pillows. It is a full-service hotel with restaurants and a beauty shop. There is shuttle back to the airport (about 10 minutes) but we have always failed to find the shuttle from the airport to the hotel. Taking a taxi to the hotel and paying the small fee for the shuttle is a definite drawback. The exchange rate between the British pound and the US dollar is also something that makes this hotel less favorable to Americans, but even so, you may find it worth it.

Price: $235 per day

Hilton London Heathrow
Located near London Heathrow Airport. If you are flying into Terminal 4, you may find this a viable choice because you can walk. If you are flying into another terminal, you may find it too far away. Though it is advertised as being 'near' the airport, it can be quite a distance. It is a full-service hotel with all the expected amenities but we prefer the Marriott (above) to this particular Hilton. It is possible to take the airport train to the hotel but if you don't know where you are going, it may be a little tricky. The taxi fare is expensive. There are some restaurants located on the first floor behind the reception desk.

Price: $240 - $330 per day
